In my mind No.1 should be down the bottom of the list and renamed ‘Emergency Range Extender’, as an EV should be capable of replicating an ICE in performance and comfort whatever the season, so just drive it in ‘normal’ mode.

No.8 I would add to charge the battery fully on an AC charger once a month to balance the cells, which will help maximise range.

I do pretty much all of these.

  • I inflated my tyres the other day
  • I drive exclusively in Eco
  • I never go above 60 on the motorway
  • I use Smart Regen and then adjust as required
  • My boot is empty unless I need to carry anything
  • I use the heated seats to warm up before using the climate control
  • I recently reconditioned the battery to 100%, but otherwise always keep my battery between 25-80%

I think its been proven that driving in eco doesn’t really save you any mileage as long s you have the ac set ti the correct temp

You mean I could have been driving in Normal all this time?
And I’d have had the same range? Well I feel silly

I never use eco mode as I believe I can do better in normal mode with a light right foot. Eco tends to make the accelerator insensitive, so I reckon you end up depressing it further to get the vehicle moving.

Sounds to me like you’re the insensitive one if you’re depressing it further. Accelerators have a pretty miserable life as it is, being continually trodden on :frowning:

Au contraire! By using normal mode, I actually depress it less, because it’s more responsive. So it’s a little less trodden on than would otherwise be the case! :wink:

My experience was improving efficiency after a few hundred miles in Eco then switching to Normal.

That is in the Kona, having had two months getting familiar with EV in the Ioniq.

I think the point to remember is that - just like an ICE vehicle you “lose” the fuel as soon as you put it in. You only get a proportion back when you regen, so something different happens on dual carriageway compare to single carriageway twisties and town work.

I’ve found the sweet spot is Normal with Smart Regen. And I don’t suffer too much with Sport mode and ramping the regen up…. and so…. YMMV…. it is more to fo with driving style than the car settings, IMHO.

But, some people can still improve their vehicle sympathy… or maybe haven’t thought through all the issues so that “Top Tips” is still useful! :+1:

When I did my probably record setting 261 miles in a 41kWh Renault Zoe, I used normal mode.

This was everyday urban driving in summer while going about my normal business, and took 10 days to complete.

ETA then I took it in a car, and I think that was 1985/6 in a 1970 Ford Escort 1100 (Mk I obv) which probably couldn’t manage 70 mph unless downhill…

Anecdotally I don’t see much difference between “driving it like I stole it” (not really onto :slight_smile: ) with full heat in the winter and ac in the summer, and eeking it out. So most of the nice things I do (like full AC charge to balance the batteries etc) are out of electrical/mechanical sympathy/best practice and to treat things well (I always treat my onto as if I have purchased it outright and owned it) rather than for much in the way of extra gain. I think the cold weather nails it more than anything I’ll ever do (I appreciate that also has an incremental effect on usage). Although the tips are always appreciated - I just get in and drive it as I would any other vehicle… (ICE and Electric differences aside…).
I think with the tips it is a fine balance between removing anxiety for a new EV driver to actually making it sound more daunting because it makes it sound like there is more to do!

Over the last few days I’ve experimented with different settings and this isn’t scientific by any means I’ve found:

  • ECO mode adds up to 7 miles per charge (but normally about 4), so for the reduced climate control and power it’s maybe not worth it
  • The impact of climate control can often be minimal with only a hit of up to 5 miles on the range however that may be due to it being quite warm lately
  • Sports mode has the biggest impact which reduces my range by up to 20 miles. However it may be my driving style being quite heavy footed combined with Sport mode being a poor mix
  • Smart/Auto regen with fine adjustment on the paddles seems to be the sweet spot in terms of regen, though I only tried with it on and adjusting it and off and adjusting it rather than leaving it on
  • For downhill followed by immediate uphill roads I found it was best to use just enough regen to maintain the speed limit then turn off regen at the bottom of the hill to maintain speed to go back up the otherside adding power when required
  • In town I am generally getting 4.5-5.5 mi/kWh in Normal with climate control off. On the motorway doing 60 this drops to 4.0-4.5. at 70 it gets down to 3.5. however do bear in mind this again wasn’t scientific and wasn’t measured on the same route/road and therefore altitude changes and traffic conditions may impact the result

Again the above are just observations over a few days. Not scientific at all as didn’t compare different settings/modes in exactly the same conditions and it wasn’t over a long period of time.

I’ll over the next few days try and compare ACC on and driving manually to see if it makes any difference. I.e being able to plan ahead

Not correct in my opinion - I did a 110 mile motorway journey last week at 70mph, I arrived with 20% remaining.

Did the same journey yesterday, same weather, conditions, traffic etc - but in Eco mode (no more than 65mph in the Zoe, slows to 60mph on hills) and arrived with 35% remaining.

Well that’s not the result of eco mode. That’s the result of a lower speed. If you drive in normal mode at the same 60mph speeds then you should also have about the same 35% remaining afterwards too.
